Ans. Faustus asked for a number of things from Mephistophilis after signing the contract with the devil. Initially, Faustus conjured Mephistophilis up to sign a bond with the devil. He bartered his soul for a life of twenty four years with an absolute power. Mephistophilis appeared in the form of an ugly devil. Faustus asked him to disappear and return in the shape of a Friar. Immediately after signing the bond Faustus asked Mephistophilis about the location and nature of hell. After that he pleaded to bring him a wife. Then he asked for a book containing all spells and charms. It will enable Faustus to call up spirits whenever he pleases. Again he requested to provide him with another book by which he will be able to study cosmology. Finally, he implored Mephistophilis to supply him a book of botany. Faustus craved to "drink/ Life to the lees...". Like Ulysses, he wanted "To follow knowledge like a sinking star/ Beyond the utmost bound of human knowledge." His appetite for knowledge coupled with carnal desire made him a purely a man of renaissance spirit.
